TIME SIGNATURE IS A SYMBOL BEHIND A CLEF SIGN ON A MUSIC STAFF

Time signatures set the number of BEATS per measure(bar) and the size of the notes.

In a 4/4 time signature the top 4 means there are 4 quarter notes or (beats) per measure. There could be 8 eighth notes or 16 sixteenth notes - as well; however, the total value must = 4 quarter note beats per measure.

The bottom number 4 tells us each beat will = 1 Quarter note.

NOW LET'S TAKE A 6/8 TIME SIGNATURE: First we divide 1 by 8 and get 1/8 or one eighth(an Eighth note). There are 6 eighth note beats per measure often written as dotted quarter notes in 6/8 timing which = 3 eighth note beats each.
